Saltwater, Cornerhouse

Ok, boys! For those of you who want to flash your cash this Valentine’s, you wouldn’t go far wrong if you took that special someone for a slap up meal at Saltwater. Although walking past Subway and UGC hardly constitutes a romantic evening stroll, the final destination is a world away from the Cornerhouse and its popcorn-hurling children.

This year’s Valentine’s set menu is £50 per head, which includes four courses plus coffee and chocolates, though no drinks.  I did warn you. But hey, she’s worth it, right? After a complimentary Bellini cocktail on arrival, choose between such dishes as little dumpling of duck wrapped in Savoy cabbage and apple sauce, blue cheese soufflé with quince jam and whole grilled lemon sole with wilted greens and new potatoes – one of Saltwater’s specialities.  The dessert menu boasts irresistible chocolate cake as well as fig and strawberry pancakes with maple syrup. If all that isn’t enough, next in line is a cheese course with homemade chutneys and bread.

Tucked away at the back of the bar, the atmosphere is pretty relaxed for such an upmarket place. The food is excellent and the staff really know their Petit Chablis la Roche from their Sancerre la Chezette. With its panoramic views of the Nottingham skyline, funky well-stocked bar and intimate restaurant, Saltwater would seriously impress.  It would certainly win me over. Not that that’s a pathetic hint or anything…
