Nottingham police have said they believe the gunman who shot PC Rachael Bown may not have been involved in the robbery she was investigating.
Bown, who had answered a call to a burglary on Lenton Boulevard, had spotted a man near the scene of the crime and had gone to speak to him. After asking for his name, Bown and her colleague used the radio to check it with their control room.
The man then attempted to flee the scene, turning into Forster Street before pulling out a handgun and shooting the 23-year-old probationer.
Detective Chief Inspector Dave Giles is currently leading the enquiry team at Radford Road Police Station, and says he would like to hear from anyone in or around the Lenton Boulevard/Ilkeston Road area between 10pm and 2am on Monday morning.
"Let us be the judge of whether anything you heard, or saw, is significant," he added. "Pick up the phone and ring our incident room."
It is currently not clear whether the attacker was the same man who broke into a student house on Lenton Boulevard earlier that evening, but police will not confirm if the attacker was involved with the crime.
