A student at the University of Nottingham campus in Malaysia has been attacked and killed by three men.
Sarankan Sriskandarajah, a Sri Lankan student of Engineering, was attacked near Kuala Lumpur and died of his injuries three days later in a hospital on the outskirts of the city. The incident occurred minutes from the University campus and followed a previous attack the week before.
Professor Ian Pashby, Vice-President and CEO of the University of Nottingham Malaysia, said: “We are all deeply saddened by the tragic death of Sarankan Sriskandarajah. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very difficult time. The serious and tragic nature of the incident has shocked the whole University community, not least because we have not experienced anything of this nature in the past.”
The University has taken steps to tighten campus security in light of the situation, and has liaised with local police in order to intensify their visible presence in the area.
A day of mourning was held at the Malaysia campus on December 1st in memory of Sarankan, and the following Friday saw a cancellation of all lectures and academic activity for a day of commemoration.
