Stevie Wonder’s first European tour for ten years attracted as diverse a crowd as the artists who cite him as an influence. Led onstage by daughter and backing singer Aisha Morris, Wonder launched into an hour’s fusion of bouncy hit singles, extended jazz-funk instrumentals and lively, comical and endearing rapport. This slightly disjointed mixture left the crowd longing to stay on their feet, and they weren’t disappointed. A flurry of classics including ‘Ma Cherie Amour’, ‘Sir Duke’ and ‘I Wish’ brought the evening to a climax, concluding with ‘Superstition’ and ‘As’ from an extensive back catalogue that left a number of favourites unplayed. He may not be generating hits as prolifically as in his heyday but Wonder’s iconic status is already secure.
