The Giver was written in 1993 as a children’s novel. The plot centres around a young boy named Jonas, who begins to question the increasingly dystopian rule of an artificially utopian society.
Jonas will be played by Brenton Thwaites, another export from Australia who, like the Hemsworth brothers and Margot Robbie (Wolf of Wallstreet) started their career in the world of Australian daytime soaps. It is an interesting choice also, because originally in the novel, Jonas is just eleven, however they seem to have opted for a much older lead. The cast of this film is rather ecclectic, Meryl Streep is taking a rare stroll into the world of Sci-fi and Taylor Swift is on the cast list (although she does not feature in the trailer). Jeff Bridges, Alexander Skarsgård and Katie Holmes are also amongst the strong names. It seems to be in safe hands, directed by Phillip Noyce, who is famous for The Bone Collector and Salt. The British release date is yet to be decided, however, judging by the American release date of September, we are looking towards the end of 2014.
