Music Advent Calendar #12: Smith and Burrows – ‘This Ain’t New Jersey’

Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.

On the run up to Christmas in 2011, Tom Smith (of Editors) and Andy Burrows (of Razorlight and We Are Scientists) collaborated to produce this quirky “mid-winter” album, capturing the melancholy of these darker months along with a generous smattering of glad tidings.

Funny Looking Angels features versions of classically Christmassy jingles, as well as moody indie covers and even some original tracks penned by Smith and Burrows. ‘This Ain’t New Jersey’ is one of the latter, and from its festive music-box opening to its resounding, foot-thumping close, this track’s story of frayed Father-Son relations becoming resolved is guaranteed to get the festive feelings flowing.
