Todd Philips of The Hangover trilogy directs a new action-comedy War Dogs, about two 20 something year olds who secure a $300 million deal with the US government to supply arms to the Afghan military during the Iraq War. Sounds far-fetched? It’s based on the true story of Efraim Diveroli (played by Jonah Hill) and David Packouz (played by Miles Teller) documented by Guy Lawson in his book Arms and the Dudes.
The trailer opens with the two securing the deal, not because of their skill or expertise but because they “lowballed” their competition. It then cuts to the lavish lifestyle of drugs, parties, sex and expensive cars. Without giving much away, there are hints of their demise. All we really have to go by is the palpable chemistry of Hill and Teller as the protagonists.
What Hill brings is a physical comedy that we’ve seen in the likes of 21 Jump Street and The Wolf of Wall Street, alongside Teller whose mere delivery of lines has often carried the films he’s starred in. As well as a cameo from The Hangover star Bradley Cooper; this stellar cast coupled with a frantic yet fun energy shows a lot of promise for this film.
War Dogs hits cinemas August 2016.
