Album Review: Ella Henderson- Chapter One

Ella Henderson could be proof that the X Factor does bring forward musicians of pure talent. Though only finishing sixth on the show in 2012, obvious care has been put into her debut album, which managed, impressively, to reach the top of the UK Albums Chart. Producing credits include Ryan Tedder (responsible for the powerhouse “Ghost”), Steve Mac and Babyface. Can the songs included in Chapter One match up to its impressive writers and producers?

“Ghost” is the first track on the album and a perfect choice for an opener.

“Ghost” is the first track on the album and a perfect choice for an opener. It’s rousing chorus, impeccable production and memorable lyrics make it a well-deserved breakout single for Ella. Her soulful voice is placed centre stage, a trend which follows much of the album. The following tracks “Empire” and second single “Glow” follow a more mid-tempo style, with soft electronic flourishes and strong hooks, particularly “Empire’s” belting chorus.

Elsewhere on the album, potential singles are found in “Rockets”, a straightforward breezy pop song that perks up the second half of the album. “Mirror Man” also similarly draws on a more R&B style, but is still catchy enough for radio. “The First Time” includes particularly emotive lyrics that are bound to strike a chord with young listeners. Indeed, most of the album’s lyrical content is concerned with the highs and lows of love, perhaps a typical theme amongst young female singer songwriters.

Ella has enough character in her voice to maybe be on parallel with such success stories as Adele and Emeli Sande.

Ella has enough character in her voice to maybe be on parallel with such success stories as Adele and Emeli Sande. This is most notable on her impressive choice of minimalistic ballads, particularly “Hard Work” and “Yours”. Stripped away from heavy production, using just piano, guitar and voice works to Ella’s benefit, such is her talent. Though certain ballad moments may drag towards the end of the album, such as on “Lay Down”, they are central to the album and help to pace the more commercial moments.

Overall, Ella is on her way to carving a musical identity for herself. “Chapter One” balances pop and soul well and her impressive vocals make a memorable debut. “Ghost” is on its way to becoming a pop classic, and her first album could go the same way.
