Advent Calendar #17: The Pogues Ft. Kirsty MacColl – ‘Fairytale Of New York’

Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.

While not a particularly cheery Christmas song Fairy Tale of New York is undoubtedly everyone’s favourite jingle during this festive time. The Pouges single has been in UK’s top 20 every year since 2005 as each year everyone remembers how much they love to slur the words to this song.

Forget ‘Merry Christmas Everyone’ what is more spreading of the festive cheer than shouting ‘Happy Christmas your arse / I pray God it’s our last’, which is probably more representative of our Christmas Day as we argue over who won charades.
