Advent Calendar #19: Wham! – ‘Last Christmas’

Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.

In December 1984, George Michael and Andrew Ridgeley, otherwise known as Wham, combined schmaltz and cynicism to well-known effect, in ‘Last Christmas.’ Anyone who has ever known heartbreak can relate to the lyrics, which are surprisingly depressing for a Christmas song.

The songs popularity would suggest that, despite it supposedly being the most wonderful time of the year (Andy Williams™) people will still be reminded of darker days. One for the adults, rather than the children, with barely a mention of Santa or Presents, ‘Last Christmas’ is, with its mixture of heartbreak and happiness (and of course bells), a quintessential Christmas classic.
