Music Advent Calendar #7: The Fall – ‘No Xmas for John Quays’

Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.

The Fall’s ‘No Xmas for John Quays’ contributes yet another depressing story to our advent series. Using the slightly crude wordplay of ‘John Quays’, or junkies, the song proclaims ‘Well the powders reach you, and the powders teach you, but when you find they can’t reach you, there is no Christmas for junkies.’.

If taking a positive message from the track, perhaps use it as inspiration to reach out this festive season. If you see a drug user, looking unhappy and homeless, try and give them a Christmas. Not by giving them the ‘powder’ they want, but perhaps a mince pie?
