With the maze trials now over and phase two beginning for Thomas (Dylan O’Brien) and the Gladers, it’s time to enter the Scorch in this dystopian teen fiction sequel.
Picking up straight from where last year’s The Maze Runner left off, we delve straight back into the action, and with sequels come new faces, and this one is no exception. Aiden Gillan (Game of Thrones) makes a very impactful appearance; he explains to the Gladers that the world is hanging on by a thread, and that this new place is the start of their new lives. However, they suspect this may just be another part of the trials. Then comes the revelation that they were not the only people to take part in the maze trials, and Thomas’ loyalty to the mysterious WCKD programme is questioned.
Deciding to get answers their own way, the Gladers leave the complex and enter the dreaded Scorch. The first shot of the Scorch shows a collapsed bridge and miles of desert but then this quickly turns into scenes of lightening, fighting, explosions and followed by stereotypical action: thriller “slide under a closing door” manoeuvre.
With Thomas coming to the conclusion that escaping the maze was just the next part of WCKD’s plan all along, will the Gladers ever be free? See for yourself when Maze Runner: Scorch Trials opens on September 18th.
