Advent Calendar #13: Fleet Foxes – ‘White Winter Hymnal’

Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.

A lovely single from Fleet Foxes’ self-titled debut album, with exquisite harmonies that complement the stirring percussion, understated rustic guitar and the innocence of the children marching through the snow. There’s something of the fairy tale in this song, especially with it coming in at just under two and a half minutes: it’s concise, and rich in rural imagery.

The simple verse, repeated three times, is genuinely comforting and just begs to be hummed along with, bringing an elevating refrain to your festive season. The red scarves even sound like the little bows tied around your Christmas presents this year. (Aww.) If there’s ever been a song to make you wish you were swaddled in blankets, sat next to an open log fire and watching the snow fall outside, this is it.
