Trailer Watch – Desert Dancer

Released already in many European territories back in 2014, Desert Dancer received a new trailer for its upcoming US release later this year.

A young man decides to break the law by dancing, supported by a posse of like-minded friends. Sound like the premise for Footloose? Desert Dancer may bear similarities to the 80’s classic, but Kevin Bacon makes no appearance. Instead, this film tells the true story of Iranian dancer Afshin Ghaffarian, who co-founded an illegal underground dance company with his friends amid the precarious period of the 2009 presidential election in Iran, risking their lives in the process.

In the trailer, the shots of characters choreographing dances are disrupted by the political furore that overshadows their lives. The story of Afshin, played by Reece Ritchie, is inspiring not because of the beauty of his craft as a dancer, but because of his desire to fight for freedom of expression in the land that he grew up in no matter the cost. The plot may feel familiar, but the truth behind the story appears to give the film its biographical integrity and grit.

Desert Dancer will be released in the US on April 10th, with a UK date currently uncertain.
