Society Spotlight: CivSoc

Sam, president of CivSoc – the society for Civil Engineers at the University of Nottingham – explains who they are for the aspiring civil engineers among you.

CivSoc is here to help relieve the {force divided by area} of an engineering degree. From freshers to final years, the aim of CivSoc is to bring together students from across all years of study through organising socials, formals, trips away and site visits.

Why should you join?

It’s the best way to make new friendships with students in your own year and across the year groups. Our idea is to create a fun and inclusive culture for students with a diverse range of interests. We want to create a space where people feel welcomed and at home when they attend any CivSoc events!

What we do

The CivSoc committee have been working around the clock to secure sponsorship over the summer around placements and jobs to ensure we are able to offer a social calendar this year with a variety of different activities which appeal to more students. These have been organised by Hamish and Flo the Social Secretaries.

Being a part of CivSoc

CivSoc aims to plan a weekend away for all members however, it is currently something we are working on. Our Industrial Liaison Officer Toby will be arranging site visits with companies to offer our members experience of the construction industry for what it is like outside of the lecture theatre with some of our sponsors and other external companies.

Find us in Freshers

If you would like to meet some of our committee and find out more, visit stall C3 at the Welcome Fair the David Ross Sports Village on Monday 23rd 11AM-5PM and Tuesday 24th September 10AM-4PM. We will be more than happy for you to stop for a chat to ask us any questions.

We will also be kickstarting our events during Welcome Week on Wednesday 25th September, with our Fresher’s Pizza Social Event which will be held in the Engineering Science and Learning Building (ESLC) 1:30PM-3PM. This will be a fantastic chance for new students to socialise with each other, meet the committee and, of course, enjoy the pizza provided!

I hope this article has given you a brief insight into what CivSoc is and what we do. We’re looking forward to hearing from you and meeting you at the Welcome Fair and events in the future!
