Advent Calendar #15: ‘Good King Wenceslas’

Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.

Good King Wenceslas begins the home stretch of songs that should make you feel truly festive. It’s one of those traditional Christmas songs, that although not a carol, priests and pastors everywhere attempt to shoehorn into their celebratory advent services to a customary groan from the congregation.

Depending on the version there can be an excess of 5 verses, and just like the national anthem no one knows more than the first couple of lines. Even so, it is impossible not to get Christmassy once the opening romp of the tune rings out, and after a few glasses of sherry, it is a favourite to belt drunkenly along to, with a pleasingly easy refrain, even if the words are forgotten.
