Ever present across London and beyond, Sisteray are slowly becoming one of the most promising bands to grace the music scene in 2016. Their new single ‘Who R Ya?’ epitomises their energetic, raucous punk sound.
It is rare to see a band as proactive as Sisteray, whether it be through their constant gigging or strenuous attention to both political and social agendas. The fifth edition of their own club night ‘Welcome to the Monkey House’ is raising money for Musicians Against Homelessness, a setup which aims to raise money for homeless charity Crisis and provide gig opportunities for up-and-coming bands.
“Their music […] pays attention to issues such as the slow collapse of London’s club scene and the destruction of music venues”
Their music is incredibly relevant too; previous single ‘Gentrification’ pays attention to issues such as the slow collapse of London’s club scene and the destruction of music venues in place of construction sites and property developments. The song acts as a soundtrack towards the recent closure of Fabric in Islington, along with the loss of historic music venues such as the Astoria Theatre and Earls Court which were both replaced by modern building developments.
Already the band are achieving constant radio recognition. They recently have been played on Chris Hawkins’ BBC Radio 6 show, who described ‘Who Are Ya?’ as “butt-kickin’ new punk.” In addition, they have been featured increasingly often on BBC Introducing playlists, Radio X shows and the odd shoutouts from The Libertines’ Peter Doherty and Carl Barat.
‘Who Are Ya?’ was produced by Rory Atwell (Vaccines, Palma Violets) at Lightship 95 and is a mix of all of Sisteray’s strong points. It opens with an intense drum beat which mixes well with catchy guitar solos. The chorus repeatedly asks ‘Who Are Ya?’, making reference to the songs title. Overall it is an anthem which wouldn’t seem out of place in venues both small and large.
“‘Who Are Ya?’ is a fine example of their genuine punk sound”
2016 has already been a big year for the band, performing relentlessly across the country. In a live setting their lively sound makes crowd surfing and stage invasions regularities. Not only are they regulars throughout Camden Town and the East End but Northern ventures are becoming ever more routine. They have also played an ever-increasing amount of festivals this summer including the legendary Leeds and Isle of White festivals as part of the lineup on the ‘Jack Rocks/This Feeling’ stages.
All in all it has to be agreed that Sisteray are a force to be reckoned with, especially after an already successful 2016. ‘Who Are Ya?’ is a fine example of their genuine punk sound and exaggerates their high potential.
