American Sniper is Clint Eastwood’s most recent directorial offering and stars Bradley Cooper as real-life US Navy Seal Chris Kyle who became “the most lethal sniper in American military history.”
The trailer is an intriguing one; mostly displaying Cooper’s character overseeing a patrol in a Middle-Eastern city through a rifle scope, whilst occasionally (and silently) flashing back to key moments in the character’s life. It’s a brilliantly minimalist trailer which doesn’t give too much away but somehow manages to communicate both the lead’s expertise in his chosen profession and the frailties that come with having a family as a soldier. There’s little music and very little dialogue. Cooper’s performance, from the brief look we are given, looks to be excellent. He has already demonstrated great dramatic ability with Silver Linings Playbook and this film appears to examine something far deeper than serving soldiers’ strained masculinity.
