Angelina Jolie-directed Unbroken is set during World War Two. This biographical picture tells the story of Louis Zamperini (1917-2014), an Olympic runner who survived a plane crash, then endured two and a half years in a Japanese prisoner-of-war camp.
Zamperini is played by upcoming star Jack O’Connell (who recently appeared in Irish war drama ’71). O’Connell often brings a quiet strength to the characters he plays, and judging by this trailer, Unbroken seems no exception. Coupled with his likeability and genuine talent, the film may just prevail.
This is the second directorial outing for Jolie (the first being In the Land of Blood and Honey), with war a central part of each. To her credit, the director seems to have struck a balance between sentimentality in following Zamperini’s journey, whilst remaining objective, for any worthwhile war film does not take an absolute stance one way or another.
This trailer conveys how beautifully the film is shot too, yet its skin of dramatic music and glory doesn’t quite, in my view, harbour substance.
Unbroken will open in the UK this December 26th.
