Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.
The trick to writing the perfect Christmas son is getting the right balance of irony and sincerity. Too much saccharine po-faced self-seriousness and you end up with Cliff Richard, not enough and you’re listening to The Darkness. Christmas is Awesome nails this balance, its playful references to naff novelty presents and the terror of sprouts delivered with a smirk that at once acknowledges the silliness and magic of the season.
The pummelling central riff that drives the song and Jamie Lenman’s throaty Hardcore scream make a novel basis for a Christmas track, but the addition of sleigh bells and a choir of carol singing kids works surprisingly well. The real appeal of Christmas is Awesome, though, lies in the fact that finally we have a Christmas song with the energy and spirit to get you pumped for the festive season, an uncommon beacon of fun amidst a slew of unbearable, low energy dirges that make up the traditional seasonal playlist.
