With the recently released new trailer for Bennett Miller’s latest film, the true crime drama Foxcatcher, the intent is clear – this film is an Oscar hopeful. Critics have been raving ever since its premiere at Cannes, where Miller won the Best Director award, and with good reason based on this evidence.
Foxcatcher focuses on millionaire John du Pont (an unrecognisable Steve Carell), who owns the titular wrestling estate Team Foxcatcher, and his attempts to train promising wrestler Mark Schultz (Channing Tatum) during the 1990s.
Also starring Mark Ruffalo as already-successful Schultz sibling Dave, the film looks to be a powerful and well-acted depiction of real events, whilst also being a tale of personal relationships and how they can change in an instant. It looks like an interesting piece of work, and one which, following this moody, tense trailer, I am very excited about.
With the main trio having already earned praise for their performances, and with strong reviews on the festival circuit to its name, Foxcatcher is starting to grapple with its status as a potential awards contender. “Coach has great power on an athlete’s life”, one character states, and this effort looks like it could equally have great power over its audience.
Foxcatcher will be released in UK cinemas on 9th January 2015.
