Divisive is an understatement for the work of filmmaker and musician Rob Zombie. If House of 1,000 Corpses was an insane clown posse visiting the house from The Texas Chainsaw Massacre, the sequel The Devil’s Rejects is Thelma and Louise starring the Manson family.
The natural born killers from 1000 Corpses, the Firefly family, are now on the run after an opening police raid on their house of terror. Horror icons Sid Haig, Bill Mosely and Zombie’s wife Sheri Moon continue their sadism while Zombie ingeniously positions the first film’s villains as the antiheroes of this sequel.
Accessible without one needing to see the first, The Devil’s Rejects is also a purer take on the exploitation films so beloved by Tarantino and company. It even features an equally fantastic soundtrack, the sunny Southern rock perfectly counterpointing and eulogising this twisted take on the American Dream.
