Holding up the philosophy that Christmas music should not only be festive, but diverse, Impact has compiled a list of 25 ‘Christmas songs’ to take you through advent. Including not only songs which are indisputably part of the Christmas canon, but also straying into areas of music which holds looser links to the season. Starting with the tenuous and heading for the recognised classics, look no further for your advent soundtrack.
Christmas songs are not what brought Mayhem to fame, while they remain one of black metal’s most influential bands their closest link to popular culture is possibly their habit of beheading live cows on stage. Justifying Mayhem as singers of the festive season is therefore an undeniably difficult task.
Yet when you hear Atilla hoarsely command you to ‘follow the freezing moon’ you cannot help but be struck with seasonal images of snow and the romance of a winter’s night. What’s more, as a Norwegian band their country contributes to to the region of Lapland, a land claimed by many to be the home of Santa Claus himself. It is not too ridiculous to suggest members of Mayhem may know Santa, or potentially, Santa may be a member of Mayhem.
