The words ‘a Coen brothers film’ and ‘director of photography Roger Deakins’ is enough to get any avid film fan excited. Combine this with an all-star cast made up of Josh Brolin, Scarlett Johansson, Ralph Fiennes, Jonah Hill, George Clooney, Tilda Swinton, Frances McDormand and many others, should get this film fan even more excited. Then release a trailer with not only hilarious moments, but a story which looks genuinely intriguing and fairly mysterious. Well, you’ll have many film fans so eager to see this film that an early 2016 release just feels unfair.
Although there is the worry that the trailer may have shown too much of the plot (as trailers tend to do these days), it didn’t seem to reveal many of the jokes and only gave us glimpses of the Coen’s well-known subtle humour. There is a lot of visual comedy in this trailer including a scene where Josh Brolin’s character is quite literally running away from his troubles. Set in Hollywood’s ‘golden age’ of cinema, there is also bound to be some good satire about the film industry, especially since the Coen’s have already delved into making fun of spy films with Burn After Reading. One moment of satire is the juxtaposition of Brolin’s voice-over describing the stardom of Clooney’s character, and Clooney forgetting his lines whilst other crew members look around confused. Overall, this trailer was a fantastic two minutes worth of clips and has set up the film to be a ‘must-see’ comedy of 2016.
Hail, Caesar! will be released on the 26th of February 2016.
