This latest pantomime extravaganza from the Nottingham Playhouse is Jack and the Beanstalk, a resounding triumph of fairy-tale magic paired with musical flair. It is directed by the ever-brillliant Adam Penford who provides the production with creativity, humour and elements of unmistakable Nottingham charm. Local references are woven throughout the show, with several areas playfully becoming the subject of light-hearted jokes.

The production thrives thanks to outstanding performances from its lead cast members. John Elkington’s Dame Daisy Trott is a standout, captivatingly funny delivering an expertly combined mix of family-friendly humour and cheeky innuendoes. Dame Daisy delights the audience with an array of costume changes, each one more elaborate and spectacular in their design. Equally impressive is Tom Hopcroft’s portrayal of Fleshcreep, the quintessential panto villain. Hopcroft brings this character to life with a perfect combination of sinister and theatricality.

The duo’s powerful performance of ‘Hold My Hand’ is a highlight, showcasing their impressive voices and amplifying the overall energy of the production. In fact, the show feels almost like a jukebox musical, with several renditions of popular songs from recent years, including a unique twist on Chappel Roan’s ‘Hot to Go!’.

The set design, under the direction of Cleo Pettitt, is nothing short of a captivating visual feast, perfectly complimenting the whimsical and larger-than-life nature of the pantomime. The stage bursts with vibrant colours and dynamic elements, fully immersing the audience in the magical world of Jack and the Beanstalk.
