A referendum on the ‘sustainable energy solutions’ motion, which was proposed at last year’s final Union Council, is due to take place in the week commencing Monday 20th October.
The motion, which has been rephrased in the form of a question, reads: “Do you think that the Students’ Union should lobby the University to install sustainable, CO2-reducing energy solutions across all buildings?”
Students will be asked to answer this question via a link on the University of Nottingham Students’ Union (UoNSU) website.
If students vote to support the motion, the Students’ Union would lobby the University to install sustainable energy solutions, including solar panels, across all buildings and support UoN’s attempts ‘to build wind turbines in open spaces’.
At Union Council, Duncan Davis, one of the proposers of the motion, stated that any additional installations of technology “should be seen as more of an investment than an expenditure”.
The 2013/14 SU Environment and Social Justice Officer, Mike Olatokun, admitted at the time that he could not support the motion. He said that he “did not like the reforms on the page” and that the measures put forward were “not necessarily future-proof”.
Voting on this motion will be open from 9am on Monday 20th October to 3pm Monday on 27th October via the UoN Elections App.
Quorum for this referendum is 10% of the Full Members of the Union.
The motion shall pass if the referendum is quorate and a simple majority is obtained in favour.
