What Different Cultures Eat on Christmas Day – Trinidad and Tobago

The UK is renowned for eating turkey on Christmas Day. Inga reflects on the traditions of Trinidad and Tobago.

Trinidad and Tobago has a rich cultural history stemming from its many historic influences such as the Spanish, French and British.

“As a result of these influences, much of the food of the island has also been shaped around these influences.”

As a result of these influences, much of the food of the island has also been shaped around these influences, with a prime example being Trinidadian Pastelles, which are eaten every Christmas!

These are believed to have been introduced to the country by early Spanish colonisers in the late 15th and 18th centuries and have remained a tradition since!

Fish, meat and vegetables are stuffed into a small corn-meal parcel and seasoned, to which raisins, capers and olives can also be added. These tasty packages are then wrapped in banana leaf (traditionally) and steamed!
